Assistant Curator 
Overview: 
The assistant curator of plant evaluation provides an opportunity to observe a diversity of plants in full-sun, shade, and green roof gardens, document their performance through data collection and digital photography, and provide outreach support via publications, lectures, classes, and tours. The Chicago Botanic Garden has one of the largest and most diverse plant evaluation programs in the United States. 
Duties and Responsibilities: 
In this role you will be responsible for the following:  
  • Collecting data on evaluation taxa in the trial gardens
  • Developing special evaluation projects
  • Photo-documentation of trial plants and managing digital image collection
  • Outreach through publications, lectures, social media, tours, and teaching
  • Developing four to six publications, lectures, and articles annually
  • Preparing annual cooperator reports and final reports for Plant Evaluation Notes
  • Assisting with plant identification, verification, and other evaluation-related curatorial duties
  • Managing social media for the evaluation program/trials
  • Assisting with special curatorial projects such as plant exploration
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications: 
Our ideal candidate will have the following: 
  • Bachelor of science in horticulture or related plant science program, or commensurate work experience as determined by the Garden, required
  • Knowledge of herbaceous and woody plants and their ornamental characteristics, required
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Digital photography experience
  • Computer experience with Microsoft Office products including Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word, required
  • Ability to work independently and in a team
