Astronomy Education/Communication Intern
Essential Functions:
-
Work closely with Company staff mentor(s) to successfully initiate and execute project(s) that support Company’s work in disseminating MMA and/or TDA creative ideas, concepts and activities to students, teachers, media and/or the public in the form of text, images, videos and audio which provide educational or communications content.

Work with individual scientists to identify significant topics and findings in MMA/TDA for dissemination to an identified audience.

Assist with the testing of materials in classrooms (virtual) when appropriate.

Create a final presentation at the conclusion of internship to reflect your overall experience to present to staff and/or submit to supervisor.

Other relevant projects as assigned by supervisor or developed in conjunction with supervisor.
Required Education/Experience/Skills/Abilities:
-
Studying toward or have recently completed a university degree in astronomy, science communication, Education (with focus on physical science discipline) or science journalism
-
You should have some previous experience in written science communication or journalism in English and, in particular, communicating astronomy or other physical sciences to the public.

You should also have a knowledge of astronomy that allows you to understand scientific papers and translate scientific research into simple, understandable concepts, as well as write about science in an engaging and accurate manner for general audiences;

You must be fluent in English, both written and spoken.

Interest in pursuing a career in science communications, education, or informal science education

Strong organizational skills

You should be able to provide clear, concise, and timely written and oral communications;

Work under time constraints and deliver to agreed deadlines and standards;

Work both on your own initiative and as part of a remote team;
-
Build good collaborative working relationships with people from different cultural backgrounds and disciplines.

Consideration (in lieu of above requirement) may be given to non-traditional students based upon relevancy to the goals of the internship, potential for career advancement, and likely impact on public understanding of science.

Proficient in Google Workspace (Docs, Sheet, Slides) or equivalent collaborative document development environments

May occasionally work at 14,000 feet altitude if performing work at our North facility.
