Job Summary

The Construction Engineer will perform a variety of tasks and assignments related to oversight of the construction of roadways, transit, railroads, bridges and transportation related structures in accordance with design specifications and guidelines. This individual will determine procedures and inspect materials; organize and participate in agency coordination and apply techniques to carry out a sequence of related engineering tasks. Review and provide recommendation on nonconformance situations and change management events. The position will require travelling to job sites located within Illinois. The position will be assigned to sites at construction projects and may require weekend and night work.

Responsibilities & Qualifications

Job Duties:

  • Apply standard techniques, procedures and criteria to carry out tasks as part of a broader assignment.
  • Inspect bridges, including railroad bridge and transportation-related structures.
  • Inspect and coordinate material testing, review contractor submittals, requests for information and coordinate with the contractor.
  • Ensure compliance with plans, specifications, and regulations.
  • Assist in setup and maintenance of master project files.
  • Assist in resolution of design/coordination issues.
  • Monitor contractor’s work progress and schedule.
  • Attend various meetings, facilitate various meetings, and prepare meeting minutes.
  • Interpret contract specifications and special provisions.
  • Perform contract documentation duties, which may include field measurements of pay items as well as daily inspection reports.
  • Coordinate activities with onsite inspectors and inform Resident Engineer of construction progress, problem areas as well as progression of those problem areas.
  • Prepare contracts for close-out, including as-builts and punch list review.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management, with an Illinois PE or SE license or the ability to obtain one.
  • Five (5+) or more years of related experience, preferably on IDOT, ISTHA, CDOT, CTA or Class I Railroad projects of equivalent complexity.
  • Experience shall include interfacing with contractors, experience in assisting in dispute resolution, and management oversight of TYLI and sub consultant staff assigned to the various aspects of the projects.
  • Must have good communication skills and be able to maintain neat and accurate records.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining safe work practices required.
  • Must be able to receive verbal and or written instructions and perform tasks independently.
