R&D Laboratory Technician
You will be accountable to operate, maintain and troubleshoot laboratory testing units and analytical instruments. You will work closely with other technicians and engineers to effectively communicate and align work schedule to meet the internal and external requests. You will exhibit a high level of safety awareness and conduct lab operations in a safe manner. You will assist and keep a well-maintained and clean laboratory.
Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:
  • Synthesize and prepare catalyst according to engineer instructions.
  • Operate, maintain and troubleshoot complex, small-scale catalytic reactors equipped with on-line GCs (gas chromatography). The equipment is highly automated and requires skill in use of computer system.
  • Operate, maintain and troubleshoot analytical instruments such as GCs for petroleum sample analysis.
  • Make test runs and sample evaluations according to engineer instructions.
  • Make Quality control assessment according to schedule.
  • Collect and submit samples for analysis.
  • Communicate test run results to engineer.
  • Identify opportunities for equipment and process improvement and submit recommendations.
  • Maintain a safe, healthy and environmentally compliant laboratory.
  • Keep chemical inventory and safety inspection records current and accurate.
  • Maintain data records and laboratory notebooks of sufficient quality to support catalyst and feed evaluations and intellectual property protection and patent applications.
  • Performs other duties as needed that may or may not be associated with lab work, for example, packing & shipping samples, ordering supplies as needed.
Required Qualifications:
  • B.S. in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering or related discipline with 0-3 years of experience in an industrial research or manufacturing environment
  • Experience with wet chemistry synthesis
  • Experience in laboratory work handling chemicals, glassware and bench scale equipment in a safe and efficient manner
  • Experience with analytical instruments such as GCs
  • Mechanical skills for assembling piping and equipment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skill
  • Strong teamwork behavior
  • Strong Commitment to OE (Operational Excellence) in lab and office environment
  • Ability to work with complex tasks, complex projects, and multiple tasks at the same time
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team
  • Good computer skills are required – competent in standard Microsoft Office suite of products (Word, PowerPoint and Excel)
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strong relationships with key Chevron colleagues outside their immediate work group
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in catalyst synthesis and preparation
  • Experience in operating and troubleshooting laboratory scale catalytic reactors, for example, fixed bed catalytic reactors, at elevated pressures and temperatures
  • Experience in operating and troubleshooting GCs
  • Strong mathematical skills highly desirable
  • Must be able to learn quickly and bring forth new ideas and solutions
