Senior Research Scientist, Thermochemical Catalysis
Position Summary
This role is responsible for the conception, implementation, and leadership of catalysis research projects as part of ADM’s Research and Development program in support of existing businesses and in the development of technology options for business growth. It includes developing technical objectives and project management plans; executing laboratory experimental programs to achieve specified project objectives; advising support teams of technicians, chemists, engineers, and analysts; and entailing direct hands-on laboratory experimentation.This position reports to the Catalysis Research Group Manager.
Job Responsibilities 
  • Demonstrate leadership in safety behaviors and safe laboratory practices, including adherence to safety processes and guidelines.
  • Function as an individual technical contributor within a cross-functional team of chemists, engineers, technicians, and business-facing colleagues.
  • Manage multiple tasks, projects, and work priorities to deliver individual and team goals and objectives on schedule and on budget.
  • Develop and orchestrate experimental plans to accomplish project goals.
  • Synthesize, test, and characterize catalyst samples to support catalyst commercialization efforts.
  • Set up, maintain, and operate laboratory reactor systems and data acquisition software for continuous and batch reactions.
  • Generate, interpret, and analyze data using scientific instrumentation and statistical techniques.
  • Report on status of research activities through verbal updates, written reports, and presentations to ADM management, colleagues, and external parties.
  • Introduce and develop new material characterization methods to support novel catalyst development program.
  • Prepare invention disclosures to protect patentable discoveries and valuable intellectual property and knowhow.
  • Monitor and share key external technology and patent activities, including relevant intellectual property disclosures and scientific publications.
  • Manage individual professional and technical development, including continuous advancement of knowledge, skill, and capabilities in field of expertise, while supervising, mentoring, and helping colleagues do the same.
Requirements and Proficiencies 
  • Ph.D. in chemistry or chemical engineering with 10-15 years of relevant experience in catalysis and process chemistry.
  • Strong dedication to safety as the primary consideration for all work.
  • Knowledgeable in catalyst preparation, testing, and development methods which translate from the bench to the commercial scale manufacturing of catalysts.
  • Hands-on experience in batch and flow catalytic reactor setup, operation, and maintenance/repair.
  • Knowledge and experience with a wide range of analytical instrumentation, including HPLC, GC, GCMS, LC-MS, FT-IR, NMR and UV-Vis spectroscopy, with operando evaluation methods especially of interest.
  • Experience developing models and experiments to measure and evaluate reaction kinetics, including rate limiting steps and possible mass transfer limitations.
  • Able to translate original research plans into an effective project management format with objectives and technical and financial targets, and lead and execute the project management plan.
  • Solid understanding of Microsoft Office and the ability to learn and operate other computer software and automation tools.
  • Experience operating through an established project management program is desirable.
  • Able to work effectively on a cross-functional team of scientists, engineers, analytical chemists, and commercial plant personnel.
  • Able to prioritize tasks and function independently while delivering on multiple project objectives.
  • Effective problem-solving and troubleshooting skills in team environments.
  • Strong and effective written and verbal communication skills and capabilities.
